Show us a bridge on the trail!

Pontoon bridge on trail between the campground and marina/restaurant at Steven A. Forbes State Recreation Area near Kinmundy, Illinois, taken 12 December 2023. The bridge was damaged by flash flooding.

Covered bridge over Whitewater River at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, Burfordville, Missouri, taken 19 January 2013. This bridge is now foot traffic only, although I remember riding over it in a car back in the 1970s. It is located near a historical water mill that operated up into the 1950s as a feed mill. The mill has been restored and is occasionally open for tours.P1197499.JPG

Good picture. You were right about the work being completed. I just saw a KFVS story that it would be reopening.

This is another of the Bollinger Mill and Covered Bridge from a Polaroid from the 1970s when the bridge was still open to traffic.

That is really cool! I'd love to be able to drive through one. Are there any near that we can still drive through that you know of?

Actually, I think, yes. The Cumberland County Covered Bridge over the Embarras River at Greenup, Illinois is open to vehicles I think. It's a modern reconstruction of two older bridges that were washed out, but it is the longest covered bridge in Illinois at 200 feet. Read about it here. It says there are no weight restrictions. I expect they basically built a wooden top over a modern steel and concrete bridge. It does look good in the pictures, though. I haven't been to it, but I think it's visible from I-70.

Illinois only has five covered bridges left I think. There is one up here around Cowden, Illinois that is closed. I was there a long time ago. Somebody tried to burn it several years ago. Indiana has more. Not sure if any of the Parke County bridges are still open to vehicles. I would guess most are closed to vehicles even if they might be able to carry cars and light trucks. There's just too much chance pedestrians could get hit on the bridge or the bridge could be damaged by a vehicle. There may be some other modern replicas that are open to vehicles like at Greenup.

I left some additional comments about the mill and bridge to your new video about the site on YouTube.

I love that bike trail! Hard to believe the Big Muddy was used to fill Rend Lake which is used for drinking water. Yuck. LOL
Was the Tunnel Hill bridge north of Harrisburg replaced? It was in bad shape 2 years ago.
