How are you with heights?

Can you hike trails that get close to the edge of tall cliffs? Scenic overlooks? Sky bridges?

For the most part, heights don't bother me. But I do get a little dizzy around them, so I don't get too close just to be safe. When I was younger, I didn't care but nowadays, I'm a bit more responsible, LOL.

How about you all?

The devil's in the details. I do get vertigo around a +100' drop!

I'm not a daredevil when it comes to heights, but I'll proceed cautiously to enjoy a good view. For some reason I'm not so much afraid of falling as I am of dropping something like my camera or my glasses although falling is still definitely on my mind. I get out on the rocks, just not like some people I see in pictures that go right to the edge and sit with their feet dangling off or pose standing in one leg.

I just sent pictures of Inspiration Point to some of my friends that I have a group text chat with, pointing out that both 2022 and 2023 saw fatal falls from there. One of friends is absolutely terrified of heights. He replied back with "The dumb a**** get too close!" and said you could stay back 100 feet and still get a good look. Of course, 100 feet back you would be in the trees or over the crest of the trail maybe and see nothing.

This guy also has a great fear and loathing of snakes. I said if you fell from there you might fall all the way down onto Snake Road. He said that snakes don't bite dead people. He did have a point. Anyway, despite his fear of heights and snakes he said he wanted to make a trip down there and run on the levee road. He's a big bird watcher and thinks that would be a good place to see birds which I'm sure it is.

I just try to be careful.

Giant City State Park has the devil's stand table trail. People will jump onto the top of the stand table. I never have and I never will. One slip and you're either dead or a veggie most likely.

I want to keep being able to hike years ahead so some things I choose not to do.
