The geologic formations along this short trail are a must-see for anyone interested in such things. I was blown away when I saw it for the 1st time a half century ago when I went to school at SIU-Carbondale. Didn't realize my home state held such wonders.

I've been back many times since. When I had ample spring in my legs and not much caution in my head, I leapt onto the Camel Head then back again. I don't recommend that stunt at any age, but I do recommend exploring Garden of the Gods beyond the Observation Trail.

Some outstanding formations can be found along a stretch of trail 108E along the bluff rim north from the Observation Trail parking. The Recreation Area has a lot more to offer on longer hikes as well.
