Do you carry a Personal Locator Beacon?

If I were to get back into the guided hiking business again, I think I would get one for that. When you're taking clients out in the backcountry, you really need to emphasize even more safety at least for their sake.

    Downtime Planned

Howdy all, My hosting service will be doing some server upgrades mainly in the BIOS area. The maintenance process will begin Tuesday, October 14th at 12:00 AM (midnight) PT and will run until 4:00 AM PT. There will likely be downtime periods. In case you notice downtime, this is likely going...

Show us a bridge on the trail!

Yep. The city maintains that section of the trail. It's technically not even tunnel hill. But they did replace it.

Should Solo Hiking and Backpacking Be Discouraged for Safety Reasons?

I agree. When I first started out, before I met my wife, solo is all that I did. I learned a lot from it, had a blast, and really found myself. I don't think I would be into hiking as much as I am today had I not did all that on my own from the start.

    Government Shutdown

Do you still hike on federal public land during the government shutdown? Some people won't because they say it's not fair on returning workers. How do you feel about this situation?

Show us a bridge on the trail!

That is really cool! I'd love to be able to drive through one. Are there any near that we can still drive through that you know of?

Should Solo Hiking and Backpacking Be Discouraged for Safety Reasons?

I almost stepped on one at One Horse Gap with my wife a few weekends ago. About 30 of them things flying around it. I've been hit by them before. Not very pleasant.

    Recent Spam

Howdy folks, As you may have noticed, we've been experiencing some spam over the past few days. I got it off the forum. I've also enabled manual approval for new accounts, allowing me to inspect and approve/reject them as needed. Hopefully, that controls the spam. But you can still post...

How often do you go somewhere to unplug?

I just got back from an extended weekend in the Ozark National Scenic Riverway in Missouri. The government was shutdown but the campgrounds and trails were still open. No cell phone signal at all. It's nice to unplug from that. Many trails have signal though these days. It's nice to go...

Backpack that doesn’t kill my neck

Definitely get something with a hip belt. Adjust your backpack to rest on your hip so that your back, shoulders, and neck isn't getting a beating from it. Your hips should be doing most of the work carrying your pack.

    Heights

I just try to be careful. Giant City State Park has the devil's stand table trail. People will jump onto the top of the stand table. I never have and I never will. One slip and you're either dead or a veggie most likely. I want to keep being able to hike years ahead so some things I choose not...

    Camping

Last year, we didn't really camp that much but I was working weird shifts here and there. This year we've really increased our camping. Going camping tomorrow at a National Park campground. I'm shocked they're staying open with the shutdown.
