This was in an entrance to Roppel Cave in Kentucky, there's a trapdoor on the floor that leads to the 150' of ladders down into the cave. I was standing under the door when it got opened and it rained crickets and spiders on me from 15' up.
Pete's cave in Indiana is a unique sandstone rock shelter/ cave right outside the edge of Hoosier National Forest, there's a trail to it but it is on private property .
There are numerous old rock carvings in the shelter, which I think is the biggest on Indiana.
The cave is more of a slot...
I've hiked in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Utah, and Colorado. Colorado is the highest elevation I've hiked, I think Blanca Peak is as high as I've ever hiked. I need to acclimate to anything over 12,500'. I've hiked La Plata too, it was a sufferfest.
It's awesome, even if you don't see any snakes! There's some amazing arches and a trail called inspiration point at the north end. There's an unofficial trail with about 150'? of exposure on both sides.
I generally wait for an Alltrails map to become available, or use a guidebook if there's one for the area. I've copied routes on Strava and it works the same. I'll go on a trip with no info if I have to, but even a YouTube video is better than nothing. The best way to go places you've never...
I don't hike much in the summer, but I run all year long. A summer trail run typically takes 1L of fluids per 10 miles. I drink water when I'm running because I'm afraid to put sugar in the hydration bladder. That's right around a cup per mile!
I think Arrowhead Arch is the best arch in Indiana! It's on private property though, so a visit involves some trespassing.
There's no purple paint or "no trespassing" signs, and no one lives anywhere near it. It's actually a double arch, the lower opening goes all the way through the cliff.
