Location
Kansas City Missouri area
Generally when I do a hiking trip it is 3-9 days. Step 1) I begin by brainstorming destinations by location or main hiking adventure(s); Step 2) I research hikes and camping options in the area; Step 3) I plan the itinerary identifying drive time and sequence of hikes w/miles and time required; Step 4) DO IT!!! Though it may seem regimented, I vary from the plan frequently. The plan is very fluid to allow spontaneity.

Step 1) Brainstorming

Step 2) Alltrails is my primary tool in researching hikes

Step 3) Plan itinerary; I write it out by day to the hour

Step 4) DO IT! I chose option 2 on this trip visiting ruins and petroglyphs- Leaving Friday evening to get a few hours of drive time in, gave us a full 5 day trip to the deserts of the west and southwest. We hiked 57 trails for a total of 94 miles. A few pics from the trip to show the result of a little planning.

I generally wait for an Alltrails map to become available, or use a guidebook if there's one for the area. I've copied routes on Strava and it works the same. I'll go on a trip with no info if I have to, but even a YouTube video is better than nothing. The best way to go places you've never been before is with someone who's already been there.

Sometimes a good boundary map is all you need, too. :)

Wow, that's a lot of work. My plans are rather simple.
I choose destination
I build funds required for the destination
I buy guidebooks and maps
I choose favorable time
I already have a stock of gears required and if I need anything more, I will buy
Then, I set off.

That's a good plan my friend :)
