Many hiking experts suggest carrying some type of emergency shelter when you hike, even if you just day hike, especially if you go out into the wilderness or backcountry.

You never know what could happen and you might need to stay in the woods and out of the elements.

I carry an oversized pocket rain poncho with me. It can be used as a shelter. I also have paracord, and emergency blanket, and a fire starter rod that I can use my knife with.

What emergency survival items do you carry if you carry them at all?

Yes, in my day pack I carry a lighter (not going to rely on rubbing sticks together). an emergency blanket or bivy, water treatment pills, a small sheath knife, couple bandaids and antibotic cream, and compass are some of the basics
