Carrying a firearm on a hiking trip

How do you feel about bringing a firearm with you on a hike?

Do you feel it's necessary?

Have you ever felt unsafe while hiking?
 
This topic is perhaps the most controversial. I have never carried a firearm on the trail, though I generally have one in the jeep, feel saver in remote camping at the trailhead.

Probably wiser to carry on the trail in bear or mountain lion country. I have never carried the alternative, bear spray
 
I used to carry concealed when I first started hiking.

Nowadays, I don't at all. I have a few knifes on me that could be used for defense. I also know how to knife fight if I needed to.

But in all honesty, I feel safe out there and I get out in the middle of nowhere, too.

When in bear country, I do carry bear spray just in case.
