The east side of the Shawnee National Forest isn't doing much.
But the west side is popping!
How about where you all are? How are the fall colors doing?
Do any of you carry your own custom or homemade first aid kit?
If yes, what is in your kit? How often do you use it?
How often do you check, replace, or modify your first aid kit?
Howdy all,
My hosting service will be doing some server upgrades mainly in the BIOS area. The maintenance process will begin Tuesday, October 14th at 12:00 AM (midnight) PT and will run until 4:00 AM PT. There will likely be downtime periods.
In case you notice downtime, this is likely going...
Do you still hike on federal public land during the government shutdown?
Some people won't because they say it's not fair on returning workers.
How do you feel about this situation?
Howdy folks,
As you may have noticed, we've been experiencing some spam over the past few days.
I got it off the forum. I've also enabled manual approval for new accounts, allowing me to inspect and approve/reject them as needed. Hopefully, that controls the spam.
But you can still post...
I just got back from an extended weekend in the Ozark National Scenic Riverway in Missouri.
The government was shutdown but the campgrounds and trails were still open.
No cell phone signal at all. It's nice to unplug from that. Many trails have signal though these days. It's nice to go...
Do you ever hike long miles in extreme temperatures?
Extreme as in really hot and humid, or extremely cold and frigid.
Will you go on longer day hikes or even overnight hikes in extreme temps?

We cross creeks a lot. There is always that chance of falling in and getting completely soaking wet.
Now I could build a fire, strip naked and dry my clothes while covering up...
Do you bring rainwear with you on hikes?
I usually just bring a raincoat.
However, some people bring raincoat, rain pants, shoe covers, special rain hats, and more.
How do you do it?
It seems a lot of hikers are trading in their hiking boots for trail runners these days.
I'm one of them. At least in the summer months, my trail runners are exceptionally more comfortable than boots. In the winter, I need waterproof boots because I cross creeks a lot. So, I can't do trail...
What do you do when your hiking gear breaks or needs repair?
Are any of your sending it in to be repaired through a warranty or paying to have it repaired? Or are you trying to repair it yourselves?
What have you had to have repaired whether you or someone else did it?
I'm waiting to start trail running again until the winter because the spider webs will drive me nuts, lol.
Hiking through them is easier than running through them - haha.
However, I hope to seriously increase my running game in the wintertime. Wondering about you other runners here! Do you run...
