How Do You Navigate Trails Without Cell Service?

I either use paper maps, but most times I preload the maps from alltrails on my phone , so don't need special navigation gear but I always carry a spare power bank. But the more remote the more I rely on paper backup.

    Sleep system?

I either cowboy camp, hammock w/rain fly, or use a bivy. All cheap internet or discount store purchases, to many years ago to know brands. Sleeping bag down to 30 degrees is a sleeping bag liner only. On the hammock instead of a quilt I use my regular cheap thin sleeping bag pad and it...

    Hiking Backpacks

As a day pack I use an old Camel Back hydration pack after having thrown the bladder away(at least 15 years old). I have also used it for short Backpack trips. Then have a Zpack backpack. The one thing I splurged on-very light weight and has proven dependable. Even the ZPack is low...

Water NO! I carry 1 cup per mile and never drink this much. I generally do 5-8 miles before taking a sip. But I carry a cup per mile or plan stashes, or a way to purify. On a number of occasions I end up sharing what I bring to others in the group. Food, I am generally lean on food...

    Fastpacking

I have not heard of fastpacking? Curious, what mph do they do? My normal pace hovers around 3 mph. Some hikes are about 3.3-5 and some are about 2.5-8. I loose half a mile an hour with the dog:) How fast does a fastpacker go? I have covered 35 miles in a 24hour period. I will have to...

Carrying a firearm on a hiking trip

This topic is perhaps the most controversial. I have never carried a firearm on the trail, though I generally have one in the jeep, feel saver in remote camping at the trailhead. Probably wiser to carry on the trail in bear or mountain lion country. I have never carried the alternative...

    Cairns

What’s dangerous though is when they are used as trail markers and people take down or even worse move. I am very wary when I find them as trail markers

    Compression clothing

You guys are going to laugh. I have done three wild caves, the longest was in for four hours, just went in the way I hike, though I did wear long pants. There were times we had to either swim or Wade chest high. Loved it.
