A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a GPS device that allows you to press an SOS button to get help if injured or lost.

Homemade Wanderlust shared her experience in having to activate hers:

If this a device you carry? Have you ever had to use it?

I'm thinking a lot more about getting one, although I haven't yet. I honestly haven't gone out enough the last couple years to justify the expense. I hope that will be changing in the coming year. I don't mind the upfront cost to purchase it, but it would grate on me to be paying a monthly fee and not use it. I know there are some different options and some allow you to suspend service. I would want to research it more to see what the best option would be. Mikeycat on YouTube did a video awhile back that reviewed a couple of the units he had and I've seen some others too.

If I were to get back into the guided hiking business again, I think I would get one for that. When you're taking clients out in the backcountry, you really need to emphasize even more safety at least for their sake.
